When Rajdeep assaulted me

I write this for two reasons: to add context to what is evident from the Zee News video clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54xGasucqAc ; to avoid a Rashomon like state and rebut Rajdeep Sardesai's attempt to paint himself the victim. He a big fish and has friends in the media, so he may succeed, but my job is to stand up.

Bored standing in the long line to get into MSG, I took a quick stroll and saw much media coverage, including the likes of Chaubey, Sawant and Sardesai. I noticed Rajdeep taunt a group of young Indians: He asked them 'Did Modi teach you to do this?..." i.e. shouting Rajdeep Murdabad.
Watch this video to see how Rajdeep was essentially trying to continue his 12 year hate-work in trying to tarnish the PM. http://indiatoday.intoday.in/video/rajdeep-sardesai-modi-crowd-frenzied-modi-fans-new-york/1/393219.html Unable to get the 'negative' answers he's looking for, Rajdeep says 'So what you guys are saying is that the "Media" was unfair to Modi' (this part is not on videos I have seen). I immediately picked up his spin and shot back: Not the media, it is NewsTraders like you who are unfair. And I called him "NewsTrader No.1". This seems to have made him lose his mind: He removed his jacket, and walked over to me (this is the part in the zee news video) and started verbally abusing me ("arsehole" and other threat-cum-abuse). I was surprised at hearing the abuse and his threatening body language given his ever-cool studio self. I retorted with the same epithet. This led to his turning around and attacking me - grabs my collar and shoves me (guess its his privilege in his un-Modified India). I was left with no choice but to push him back.

I would urge people to note 4 things:
1. Rajdeep indulges in unprovoked tarnishing and demeaning of the Indian PM on foreign soil and Indians living there https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F1XP9I49Fw
2. Rajdeep starts the verbal abuse / intimidation
3. Rajdeep starts the physical assault
4. Rajdeep turns around and spins victimhood - 'frenzied Modi fans abuse him'.

Is it even remotely acceptable for a senior Indian journalist to engage in unprovoked insulting of our elected PM on foreign soil while he's on an important diplomatic tour, and wilfully trivialize a unique event (by continuing his political battle with the PM) that allowed the NRI community and the Indian Govt to build a stronger bond?

I believe you just cannot carry your personal battle with your PM onto foreign soil and cause harm to the country.

While I reflect upon what next steps to take, I urge everyone to write to the India Today group condemning such dastardly behavior by their 'senior' employee. I request the media (i have no faith in NewsTraders) to take this message to their viewership.

I reflected much on this since then -- what explains Rajdeep's egregious, shameful and harmful behavior? A apt word in American local parlance sums it up best: He's a Hater.

NYPD is not the Mumbai Police. File an assault complaint and provide them the evidence. We are all waiting to see the high and mighty tumble...

    3. Has anyone from PM contingent contacted you yet? News reports saying that Gautam Adani called up Rajdeep and conveyed to him that PM is upset with the crowd for ill-treatment of Rajdeep! WTF!? So now even PMO is saying #IStandWithRajdeep!

Better file that case with NYPD directly, hand over all evidence and DO NOT trust Indian authorities would be my advise. Stay strong...

    4. KB - NaMo no way would be upset...I'm sure he don't care what happens to such news traders...Rajdeep especially. If it's true It may be just a formal message. Even Rajdeep knows what he means to Modi..LOL

    5. RaviG: Instead of taking sides, PM should be on equal footing vis-a-vis both Rajdeep & Mahender.

We, as fellow NRIs, are asking Mahender, who claims to be the victim to file a complaint. The US is not India, you have NO EXCUSE to not file a police complaint and simply make allegations on a blog.

If there is any country in the world where the little guy has a chance to WIN against the big guy it is the USA!

So my humble request to Mahender, in the interest of justice, is to file a police complaint ASAP while Rajdeep is still in town!

You are in the US and if you continue to be a coward instead of reporting to police and taking the fight forward then you have only yourself to blame.

Rajdeep will carry on with his comfortable life and continue defaming our PM wherever he goes. Mahender, you have a golden opportunity to put an end to this. Are you a true patriot or just another rabble-rouser?

  8. If he assaulted you first, as the videos I have seen appear to show, then you have a case for assault and battery. You need to consult a lawyer. From what I know, assault does not have to involve physical contact -- that is battery.

The wiki says, "An assault is carried out by a threat of bodily harm coupled with an apparent, present ability to cause the harm. It is both a crime and a tort and, therefore, may result in either criminal and/or civil liability. Generally, the common law definition is the same in criminal and tort law. There is, however, an additional criminal law category of assault consisting of an attempted but unsuccessful battery. The term is often confused with battery, which involves physical contact."

    Best wishes.

  18. "...son of the Indian Test cricketer Dilip Sardesai,..". Sadly in a country as classist as India, this kind of sentence tells you all you need to know about a person's character. Indian Americans may have been advantaged relative to the average Indian, but we had to leave to escape the feudalistic system that these rich Indians created to monopolize opportunity. Now we've surpassed the success of Indian good-for-nothing gentry and we're coming back to take back what these elitist, Rahul Gandhis of India have taken from the common people who work hard and earn what they have. Modi is a perfect example of that. Indian Americans stood behind this common man from day one, and he will make strides in ending neo-fuedalism in India. If Sardesai gets drunk and runs over a family of homeless Indians, he would get away with it. We should have shown him that day what its like to be on the receiving end of this.

POLITICIANS breed them for their own selfish motos. Almost all journalists have aligned themselves with some political party I.e Rajdeep with Congress
    Rajat Sharma with BJP
    The list goes on ...
Instead we all should follow and admire the unknown CAMERAMEN who risk their lives to bring the truth via their perfectly timed shots.
World over CAMERAMEN are respected except in India.
Its high time we stop hero worshiping these jounalists and get to know the cameramen instead by names and start following them instead of these Chamcha Journalist's.

Irrespective of heckling - there is no reason to spread negativity and assault an individual, especially when the crowd had gathered to celebrate NRI's achievement and welcome its Prime Minister. If you can't join in the celebration, you should not spoil it for those gathered. If you don't support the PM or India's Supreme Court, then that's your decision. But you cannot continuously enforce your views on others just for your personal gain.

If the journalist did not want to hear "Modi" chants - he should have not joined fans celebrating - rather stayed on a side where he would have quietness.

The Rajdeep Sardesai video no one will post on youtube or Social Media!
Rajdeep was already trending on twitter after what happened earlier in the day before the Modi's speech at the Madison Square Garden. You guys saw that the video, didn't you. (This was shot before PM arrived at Madison Square Garden) But this is the episode that no one will tell you about, and in fact, I DARE EVERY ONE OF YOU WHO RECORDED THIS BUT WON'T POST IT FOR REASONS NOT TO BE NAMED.
Senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai. Image courtesy: IBNliveSenior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai. Image courtesy: IBNlive
The Story Part II ( Right after the event at Madison Square Garden) I was at Times Square when I heard or in fact read about it as the screen out there flashed a tweet about Rajdeep's episode earlier in the day.
Once done interviewing and usual stuff, took a walk down to Madison Square Garden. The Venue where Rajdeep was heckled in the morning. By the time I reached, the speech was still on, so took a pit-stop right across the street at my hotel to charge the batteries of my cell phone and my digicam.
I return, interviewed a couple of people on their way out. But while I interviewed the last family, I hear some noise, quite different from 'Har Har Modi' or the 'Modi Modi' chant across the 7th Avenue. I turn around only to find Rajdeep Sardesai and a senior cameraperson in the middle of a mob trying to calm down a group of approximately 50 people around him. My first Reaction: Are these guys for real?
Second reaction: To see if any other TV crew was there, none! I barge in, just to check if Rajdeep was alright. Yes, he was. Smiling, calm, and trying to reason out a crowd which wasn't prepared to listen to anything he said. Then the pushing and shoving begins. A barrage of abuses follow. Why? Probably because of Rajdeep's tweet about an influential person staying in the same hotel as Narendra Modi's.
The mob called him by names and hurled the choicest of words towards him. When I tried to shield the fellow journalist, I realised, that I became a target as well. This went on for good 10-15 minutes. The NYPD was right there, but won't blame them for not knowing what was going on in the middle of that crowd of 50 odd people. The cameraman had to ensure his equipment was safe, so was trying his best he could, to fend off a few people who tried to come closer to Rajdeep. This went on for good 10 minutes.
Despite my repeated requests to stay away from Rajdeep, the mob continued to shout pro-Modi slogans right in front of his face to instigate him. A particular person wearing glasses, and once again in an orange attire, almost shoved his phone into the cameraman's lens to which Rajdeep protested.
Luckily, fellow scribes Mohit Roy Sharma and Bhupendra Chaubey arrived at the scene. Three of us literally made a human chain, to get Rajdeep out of that place. I'm sure all of this is on tape as the cameraman might have stopped recording, but the PCR back in India would have everything that transpired in front of that camera lens.
I say this with conviction that a lot of people had their cameras rolling as well. The abuses, the pushing and shoving, and the instigation, all on tape.
Yes, you have every right to be a supporter, but let's not mix a fan with a fanatic. Learn to respect other people. Learn to respect to earn respect. Just a few minutes ag o, the Prime Minster delivered a lovely speech about peace and how India is a great democracy. But you guys defy all logic.
I hope this post is shared and reaches all the people who saw the second episode right in front of their eyes and captured it on their cameras.
Look inside you, and just think what you did and ponder upon what you could have done.
    Peace

    5. It really does not matter who was abusing whom or what words were being used by whom against the other person. The one and only thing that matters is somebody taking the law into their own hands and committing a crime. In this video it is overwhelmingly obvious that it was Rajdeep Sardesai who physically attacked Mahender. So it's a no-brainer for the New York Police Department. They need to arrest Rajdeep and put him behind bars. The court hearings can come later after the NY District Attorney files indictment charges against Rajdeep.

Here we have a guy who committed a crime in the full view of the public, there is clear and overwhelming evidence of his having used physical force and assault on a person, and you are moving heaven and earth to defend and protect that criminal. Don't worry, in a few hours' time Rajdeep Sardesai will be handcuffed and taken to the prison, and then you can run about and keep shouting for his release. 14. I saw the raw video. But nothing new. Rajdeep says money is there but no class. Labelling them NRIs. Who defines the class. Being in congress party and accusing, one person constantly from last 12 years and getting awards for wrong journalism. where is the class? Biased journalism will not bring journalism. He was instigating the NRI's by asking the questions like ' Modi promised many things. will you believe he will fulfill them?'
Your prime minister wants to do something for the country to get some investments asking for the help of NRIs in building up the nation. RS would have asked in the positive note the questions if he is a responsible journalist and citizen. Here, in India, we are not' vullus' to watch such biased, sarcastic news by seeing his Padmasree.
I am not going to see Headlines Today till his ouster news comes in print media.

Who told you to start shouting slogans and bad words like Rajdeep Murdabad and all that..You guys were acting like Hooligans and behaving like 3 paise ke tapori and rowdies over there in front of the camera. What an image you guys were showing it to the world while shouting abusive world openly. In the video it was evident that Rajdeep kept his cool all the time asking you guys to answer the questions but you idiots were just shouting stupid slogans "Modi Modi" which was not even relevant there. The you Mahender came into picture showing fingers to Rajdeep and shouting something and that is what causes Rajdeep to loose his cool and abuses you for which like a true patriot you started abusing him in reply. I agree that Rajdeep should have shown some class and should not have indulge in the pig fight with idiots like you since he is the known person there and the rest were just the face of the mob. It was clearly him who should have stopped himself to indulge in such incident but he is also a human being who was provoked by his own countrymen in the foreign soil which can not tolerate the straight questions about there favourite leader be it right or wrong. Time to think about your bhakti because if this will continue you will tarnish the name of Modi.

We are not for any individual but for the country and we will chant any one name who is doing good for us and this time its NaMO.

His hatred is so intense that many a times his Psychopathic behaviour, his frustration and irritation immediately reflects on his face and body as soon as anybody starts praising Mr Modi or BJP.

If Senior journalist wants to question integrity of a Representative of People of India, they should have questioned the previous un-elected Representatives of Republic of India.

    ReplyDelete
  86. "I believe you just cannot carry your personal battle with your PM onto foreign soil and cause harm to the country"
    What are you talking about?!
How does foreign soil or desi soil make a difference. A question asked by a journo anywhere in the world would hold good BECAUSE THAT IS HIS JOB!!
It is his job to ask questions whether you like it not. Not every journalist has to have a personal battle to report a news.
Everyone has an opinion, which probably would not match yours. Live with it! Thats the beauty of democracy. The world does not revolve around you.

If you do not like the question he asked, just say so. Its just plain stupid to heckle/ intimidate and chant anti-journalist slogan.

Its just shameful that the fight turned physical.
But tell me, if you went about doing your job(whatever that may be) and 100 people start heckling around you and start chanting slogans against you, would you go and hug them?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well you would not go and hug them but would you go and hold them by their collar and push them? Because RS has done that and he has done that FIRST - I repeat - instigated physical assault FIRST. The exchange was clearly limited to words till Mr. Sardesai chose to push this person by holding his collar (i hope you have seen the video). The second thing which very obviously puts Mr.Sardesai in bad light is that post the incident, he very cleverly chose to show the clipping with only this person pushing him before other people like Mr. Swamy posted the full video showing that the first instigator was Mr.Sardesai. So journalists have the right to instigate, provoke and even launch physical assaults and in doing all of these they are simply "doing their job" while the common man man must just put his second cheek or in this case the second collar to be pushed around by the journalist.

For the first time, people in India have felt hope - hope of change, hope of opportunity, hope of betterment, hope of feeling pride in our nation. Let us not put up with idiots like RS in the name of democracy. Please do your research, watch all possible videos of the incident before making random comments on democracy. The fourth estate - journalism - is not free from corruption and power mongering - just like politics.

      Delete
    2. Sir, i have seen all the videos. It all started when RS was trying to ask questions and was not allowed to complete. He was instead abused/shouted upon (in other words intimidated).
If you do not want to take questions, why stand near him and the camera. If you do not want to answer, just say so. Whats the point of chanting anti-RS slogans?!
Im not justifying any physical violence, but let a professional do his bloody job!
As far as "hope of change" is concerned.. people of india had hope even during Rajiv Gandhi's time, Indira gandhi's time. Give a charismatic speech, people's emotions run high and believe anything.
Its the Cynics that keep our feet to the ground.
If you think RS is a cynic by asking questions that are not comfortable, Respect it! You have right to reject his point of view, but to say "let us not put up" with people who have a different opinion. That is intolerence.!!

    4. NRI Saga,
When media goes abroad, to cover the visit of their PM, they should not bring the politics. No way. Imagine that when Obama in India, US media doing the same thing here in India!!. You can't even imagine. Such a thing will not happen. Should not happen.
Our prime minister should be respected outside India more than in India. He is representing 1.2 billion population there.
Else you are demeaning your constitution.
When one can't respect, let them keep quite.
Journalists do have their ethics. Not all rights. There are responsibilities. They should be patriotic.

Once they covered 'Plague' in Surat vehemently ,in 95, we lost lot of trade and faced lot of financial losses.
They covered live Kasab and crew invasion. Atleast two of our defence personnels died due to the TV coverage.
Be sensible in atlking about media rights.

    5. lekhavathee, pls go ahead and ask ! and my answer shall be the truth ie "NO"!
but if you ask me if im sleeping with your mother, the answer will be "YES".!
      Because these are BASIC FACTS!
If you ask, you shall get an answer.. and thats precisely my point, that RS did not get to do his job (ask questions).!

Sarada, your point is well taken. But the point remains that he WASNT ALLOWED TO ASK ANYTHING>! If he had asked questions demeaning to the PM, i would have understood. He only retaliated to the heckles and the chanting which can frustrate anyone if they are not allowed to do their job!

10yrs back, When congress crowd was crying frenziedly infront of Sonia house, asking her to become PM. The scenes were very ugly. This RS preached the viewers that 'we have to accept this side of congress party'. Double standards.
He does bulley journalism not true journalism. He has to join some good jounalism institute and retrain himself.
      He is like 'Mahishasur' presently.

  87. A SENIOR JOURNALIST FROM INDIA WHO SHAMED MEDIA AND THE COUNTRY THROUGH HIS BEHAVIOUR

It is unfortunate that on such a solemn occasion at NY, just ahead of the Prime Minister's much-awaited speech to thousands of the Indian Diaspora, a Senior journalist from India openly indulged in highhandedness and exhibited the height of his arrogance. He has shamed media and the country through his behaviour. A good news in this connection is that Media in India has finally woken up to the reality of filth within and has started responding to it. Here is a link to Zee News giving a detailed coverage on the incident and questioning Rajdeep Sardesai: http://tinyurl.com/qa94uxb ‘This is the right opportunity and we must maintain the pressure till Rajdeep is brought to book. Modi-followers don't want to sit quite letting irresponsible and unethical media people like Rajdeep get away with their mischief. As most have indicated in their comments, Rajdeep has fallen in terms of journalistic standards’. Read and sign Petition at http://tinyurl.com/krm96rb (‘Remove Rajdeep Sardesai from Headlines Today channel’) by Nagaraja Gundappa Bengaluru. As this petition reveals: 1. Rajdeep Sardesai called a person who had gathered to watch Narendra Modi's event in Newyork an asshole and then misbehaved by physically pushing him and then got pushed back and then showed only the video footage of him being pushed back to portray as if he has been victimised. This is dirty trick politics that does not befit a journalist. 2. He has shown a classist attitude and insulted the NRIs by declaring that they have money but no class. 3. He abuses people for supporting Mr. Narendra Modi in New York calling them frenzied crowd just because he was heckled. How Rajdeep Sardesai throws the first punch at NaMo supporters and then claims victim-hood? See video here: http://tinyurl.com/kkqzoew The truth is that angry Rajdeep Sardesai at Madison Square Garden NYC Sep 28, 2014,tried to grab a person in the gathering http://tinyurl.com/lu5dfcq READ MORE: Rajdeep Sardesai attacked a person, his fellow media persons attacked truth: http://tinyurl.com/pxbowff Also Blog at http://tinyurl.com/na3kn83

  101. It seems that Rajdeep had "some different" agenda while at Madison Square. He was trying his best to defame Indian PM in foreign soil by provoking and taunting NRIs in America. He purposefully initiated the "incidence" and got beaten by the crowd of NRIs and very successfully proved himself the biggest opposing and heroic journalist of the most strong and deserving PM of India.

By doing this, probably he might have been looking forward to attract some "sympathy" (or funds ???) from some anti-Modi powers by getting into their good-books.

But at the same time, he proved himself a "frenzy" journalist having "very good amount of money but no class" .....

  109. Mahender, you should not let go of this criminal and despicable act. You should inform the District Attorney for New York, Cyrus R. Vance Jr. at 212-335-9000 and ask to personally speak to the DA. This physical assault on you should not go unpunished, no matter how big a guy Rajdeep is. Lest you started thinking I am pestering you, I shall stop writing any more posts on this blog.

  114. This buffoon-Rajdeep Sardesai can be charged for assault, battery and trying to incite a riot. You can also file a civil lawsuit against him.
After he has been charged with this felony he will be deported after serving his sentence and will never be able to obtain a U.S. visa.

  115. Mahender, I really admire you for the courage you showed there at MSG. I have told this to many of friends that Rajdeep was fishing for negative comments about our PM all the time up until this incident happened. When he was unsuccessful in doing that, he got impatient and started using abusive language. Surely this is the case of anti-nationalism and he cannot escape from this by playing victim. Towards the end he started playing the nice guy by saying this is the moment of celebration etc. etc. Yes when nothing works what can you say. Rajdeep, indeed you are an asshole.

  118. Hi Mahender,

My humble request, pls take it to some conclusion. We have just social media and he maligned you with the help of paid India media(and of course ppl take sides of journalist., he is one among them). Please file a formal complaint. If needed we can start a signature campaign. Dont leave him like this else he will do the same to some other random guy who might not be in the position to retaliate.

  122. The video posted demonstrates Mr Sardesai verbally abusing and physically assaulting an individual. My suggestion would be file an assault suit against him and drag him to court within the US. Ask for punitive damages, and physical assault, inciting hatred and poor conduct in public. Slap all charges on Mr Sardesai and get a good lawyer.
